| biography:
| King of Italy (1878–1900), born in Turin, NW Italy. He fought in the war against Austria (1866), and as king brought Italy into the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria (1882). He supported Italian colonialism in Africa, but his popularity declined after Italy's defeat by the Ethiopians at Adowa in 1896. A conservative with authoritarian leanings, he repressed popular risings with the help of right-wing prime ministers, and was assassinated at Monza by Gaetano Bresci. |
