| biography:
| Writer, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. A patriot, he took part in the 1848 Venice insurrection and the 1849 defence of the Roman Republic, and was exiled to Switzerland. Back in Milan, he became close to the fledgling scapigliatura literary movement as a result of his work with the review Gazzetta ufficiale di Milano where his novel Cent'anni appeared in instalments between 1857 and 1864. The novel, published in 1868, charts Milan's events between 1750 and 1850, and made the historical novel fashionable again. Among his other works are Lamberto Malatesta (1843) and Valenzia Candiano (1844). |
