| Italian politician, born in Tortona, Piedmont, N Italy. He was a socialist deputy (1919–26) and was sentenced to internal exile. Freed in 1934, he participated in the clandestine movement to reorganize the party and was a deputy in the 1946 Constituent Assembly. He was against an alliance with the communists and was one of the leaders of the breakaway socialist movement that formed the Partito Socialista Unitario. In 1951 it merged with the PSDI (Italian Social Democratic Party) of which he became leader. He was minister for public works in 1954–7. |
