| Writer and physician, born in Mineo, Sicily, S Italy. After graduating in medicine and specializing in cardiology, he embarked on a literary career with the neo-realist Il sarto della strada lunga (1954). Science and fantasy play an increasing part in his later works, Il fiume di pietra (1964), La divina foresta (1969), Notti sull'altura (1971), which is thematically close to Calvino, and Il dormiveglia (1988). |
