| Writer, born in Mogliano Veneto, Veneto, NE Italy. His early novels, such as Il cielo è rosso (1947) and Il brigante (1951) appear to belong to the neorealistic genre, whereas later works, notably Il male oscuro (1964), La cosa buffa (1966), and Anonimo veneziano (1971), are characterized by dark psychological study. He also wrote Guerra in camicia nera (1955) about his experience as a soldier in Africa. In 1964 he was awarded two of Italy's most prestigious literary prizes, the Campiello and Viareggio. |
