| Spanish statesman and cardinal, born in Firenzuola, NC Italy. He became prime minister of Spain and was made a cardinal in 1717. His domestic policies were liberal and wise, but in foreign affairs his decisions were often impetuous and irresponsible. He violated the Treaty of Utrecht by invading Sardinia, and was subsequently confronted by the Quadruple Alliance of England, France, Austria, and Holland, resulting in the destruction of the Spanish fleet. Dismissed in 1719, he returned to Italy. |
