biography: Astronomer, born in Savigliano, NW Italy. He studied at Berlin and at Pulkova, Russia, and became director of Brera Observatory, Milan. He discovered the link between meteor showers and comets, observed double stars, discovered the asteroid Hesperia, and termed vague linear features on Mars as ‘canali’ (1877).
