| Italian politician, born in Sambiase, Calabria, S Italy. He participated in the 1848 revolutionary risings in Naples and Caserta, and in the defence of the Roman Republic in 1849. He planned the Sapri expedition with Carlo Pisacane (1857) and was taken prisoner. He became a deputy of the left in the new Italian parliament but then moved considerably to the right. As interior minister with Agostino De Pretis (1876–7) and Antonio Starabba di Rudinì (1891–2), he pursued a repressive policy. |
