| Tenor, born in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. An officer in the Piedmontese Guard, he left the army in 1836 and moved to Paris, where he studied voice at the Paris Conservatory. He made his debut in 1838 in Robert le diable, and became immediately successful. There followed a long series of operatic triumphs in Paris, London, St Petersburg, and America, and he married the singer Giulia Grisi (1811–69). After his retirement he lost his fortune through disastrous speculations. |
