| Composer, born near Modena, N Italy. In 1671 he became a violinist in the court orchestra, and subsequently chapel master of the cathedral. Between 1666 and his death he published a great quantity of chamber and vocal music, together with a treatise, the Musico prattico, which was influential in its day. His sons Giovanni Battista Bononcini (1670–1755) and Marc Antonio Bononcini (1675–1726) were notable composers, the former especially remembered for his rivalry with Handel. |
