| biography:
| Soviet marshal, born in Strelkovka, W Russia. He joined the Red Army in 1918, commanded Soviet tanks in Outer Mongolia (1939), and became army chief-of-staff (1941). He lifted the siege of Moscow, and in 1943 his counter-offensive was successful at Stalingrad. In 1944–5 he captured Warsaw, conquered Berlin, and accepted the German surrender. After the war he was commander of the Russian zone of Germany, and became minister of defence (1955), but was dismissed by Khrushchev in 1957. |
