| biography:
| Film director, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. A student of theatre design and later of film, she won a scholarship to the Film and Television School in Sydney. Early works include the drama The Singer and the Dancer (1976), which won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Short. Several of her films focus attention on the difficulties facing independent women, such as My Brilliant Career (1979), High Tide (1987), The Last Days of Chez Nous (1991), Little Women (1996), and Oscar and Lucinda (1997). She has won many AFI awards, including Best Film and Best Director. |
