| biography:
| Poet and chronicler, born in Tournai, France. In 1331 he became abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Martin in Tournai where he had been a monk since 1289. He wrote two chronicles in Latin, Chronicon majus and Chronicon minus, which provide important evidence for French history through his use of eye-witness accounts and his critical view of history. His poems, in the local dialect, are more valuable philologically than artistically. |
