| biography:
| British historian, traveller, and writer. He studied mediaeval Asian exploration at Oxford, and has recreated many voyages following the routes of early explorers and navigators, using vessels reconstructed to the original specifications. These include the voyages of St Brendan, the legendary Irish monk, from W Ireland to North America; Sinbad, whose seven long voyages in an Arab dhow took him from Oman to China; and the early Greek quests of Jason and Ulysses in a bronze-age galleon. He has written books on these and other projects, such as The Brendan Voyage (1978), In Search of Genghis Khan (1991), and The China Voyage (1994). |
