| Athenian hermit. According to legend he went to France and built a hermitage, where he was discovered by a Frankish king who was so impressed with his holiness that he built a monastery on the spot (St Gilles) and made him its abbot. He is the patron of lepers, beggars, and cripples. Feast day 1 September. |
