biography: Efficiency experts: Frank (Bunker) Gilbreth (1868–1924) and Lillian (Evelyn) Gilbreth, née Moller (1878–1972), born in Fairfield, Maine, and Oakland, California, USA, respectively. He began work as an apprentice bricklayer in 1885, and from that time devoted himself to developing time-and-motion studies of industrial processes as a means of increasing efficiency. She was a teacher and psychologist until they married in 1904. Together they laid the foundations of modern scientific management, collaborating on several books and many articles, and serving as consultants to numerous firms in the USA and abroad. She wrote four books on her own, and was a pioneer in making the environment easier for the physically handicapped. They had 12 children, two of whom, Frank Jr and Ernestine, wrote the popular book and film Cheaper by the Dozen (1949–50), recording how the Gilbreths applied efficiency methods at home.
