| Musicologist, born in Havana, Cuba. A music critic in the 1930s, in the next decade he worked for the Library of Congress and for National Broadcasting Company radio, and then taught and administrated at various schools including the University of Oklahoma, Tulane, and the University of Texas. He was a noted specialist in the music of the Americas, and his books include the classic history America's Music (3rd edn, 1987). |
