| Dutch politician, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. He joined the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), became an MP (1971–7, 1981), was minister of economic affairs in the van Agt cabinet (1977–81) and the Lubbers cabinet (1982–6), and was vice-premier in the first Lubbers cabinet. He was blamed for the collapse of the Rijn Schelde Verolme business, in spite of many years of financial support from the government, and was omitted from the 1986 Lubbers cabinet. |
