| biography:
| The most prominent member of a Dutch family, probably from Ouderkerk near Amsterdam, who derived their name from their castle on the R Amstel, and who tried to create an independent principality between Utrecht and Holland. He supported the rising in Kennemerland and attacked Utrecht, but Floris V, Count of Holland, made peace with the rebels. He changed sides when opportune, was involved in the capture and assassination of Floris, and ended his days exiled in Flanders. The poet Vondel based his play Gijsbrecht van Aemstel on him, although the events described could only have applied to his son, Jan, and are not entirely historical. |
