| biography:
| The first Marquis of Mantua, born in Mantua, Lombardy, N Italy, the son of Francesco Gonzaga and Agnese Visconti. He became ruler of the city in 1407 on the death of his father, and was given the title by Ludwig the Bavarian in 1433. At first he allied himself with Venice and managed to extend his domains. Later on he switched to Ludovico Maria Visconti (1438), and fought against Venice, losing some of his gains. Under his rule, Mantua became a powerful political and cultural force. |
