| Architect, the most important of the late 16th-c, born in Rome, Italy. A pupil of Vignola, he is best known for the cupola of St Peter's and his work on the Palazzo Farnese, left unfinished by Michelangelo. He was also responsible for some of the fountains of Rome, and designed many palaces, notably the Villa Aldobrandini (1598–1604). |
