| Clergyman, born in Sonnino, WC Italy. In 1819, he went to Rome, and entered the Grand Seminary, where he gained the favour of Pope Gregory XVI. In 1847 he was made cardinal-deacon by Pius IX, and in 1848 was premier and minister of foreign affairs. He accompanied the pope in his flight to Gaeta in 1848, and returned with him to Rome, becoming foreign secretary (1850), and supporting the policy of absolute papal administrative power. An opponent of reforms, he was also against Italian reunification, and refused to deal with the Savoys. |
