| biography:
| Romanian prime minister (1952–5) and president (1961–5), born in Bîrlad, E Romania. He joined the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) in 1930, and was imprisoned in 1933 for his role in the Grivita railway strike. On his release in 1944 he became secretary-general of the RCP and minister of communications (1944–6), and was instrumental in establishing a Communist regime. He then served in a variety of economic posts (1946–52) and as prime minister, before becoming state president. Although retaining the support of Moscow, he adopted increasingly independent policies during the 1960s. |
