| biography:
| President of Brazil (1930–45, 1951–4), born in São Borja, S Brazil. He was elected a Federal deputy in 1923, and in 1930 seized power by revolution. His government did much to unify Brazil. From 1937, when he dissolved Congress and suppressed all political parties and trade unions, he governed as a mild dictator. In 1945 he was ousted by popular clamour for a democratic constitution, but under this was voted back to office (1950). Four years later, in the face of mounting opposition, he committed suicide in Rio de Janeiro. |
