| biography:
| Folklorist and geographer, born in Osona, Soria, NC Spain. He signed most of his work as Gervasio Manrique de Lara in memory of his homeland. Most of his works were published after the Civil War and relate to Spanish ethnography. Interested in the history and traditions of his native land, he collected information on its fiestas, customs, and stories (both oral and written), published in Soria. La ciudad del Alto Duero. Leyendas y tradiciones de su provincia (1936). In 1949 appeared Castilla: sus danzas y sus canciones in which, as with his earlier book, he showed a passing interest in ethnography. In 1963, for the Revista de Dialectología y Tradiciones Populares, he wrote an article El casticismo de Castilla en el folklore. His Humor castellano. Cuentos populares (1974) constitutes a rare exploration of popular humour. |
