| The first woman to swim the English channel, born in New York City, USA. She won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games as a member of the US 400 m relay team, and two bronze medals. On 6 August 1926 she swam the Channel from Cap Gris Nez to Kingsdown in 14 h 31 min, very nearly two hours faster than the existing men's record. |
