| biography:
| Architect and furniture designer, born in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He started as a woodworker, opening his own cabinet-making workshop in Utrecht in 1911. After studying architecture, he began to design his own furniture, notably the ‘red-and-blue’ chair (1918). His architectural work includes the Schröder House in Utrecht (1924), a world heritage site, exhibiting the rectilinear quality and use of colour associated with the De Stijl movement, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, completed posthumously in 1973. |
