| Poet, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He began with the illegally published collection of poems Vroege voorjaarsdag (1941, Early Spring Day). After World War 2 he assumed a prominent position in the Movement of Fifty (Vijftigers), became a member of Cobra, and worked for Podium literary magazine as an editor. In 1955 he compiled the anthology Vijf 5 tigers (Five 5 tiers) and wrote the introduction to this compilation which is essential for a good understanding of the Movement of Fifty. In addition he translated the work of Sartre, Dürrenmatt, and Brecht. In 1970 he was awarded the P C Hooft-prijs, and in 1989 received the Prize of Dutch Literature for his entire oeuvre. |
