| Slavic studies specialist, born in Chase City, Virginia, USA. A member of the editorial boards of the Dial (1919) and the Freeman (1920–4), he was best known for his research on agrarian Russia while teaching at Columbia University (1924–71). During World War 2 he was chief of the USSR Division, the Research and Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services (1941–5), and was awarded the Medal of Freedom (1947). He wrote Rural Russia Under the Old Regime (1932) among many other books and articles. |
