| biography:
| Italian patriot and soldier, born in Genoa, Liguria, NW Italy. A follower of Mazzini from 1846, he was a volunteer in the Italian Independence Wars of 1848–9 and 1859. He helped Garibaldi plan the Expedition of the Thousand and was his second in command. In 1860 he suppressed the Bronte peasant risings, became a general of the new Italian army in 1861, and took part in the 3rd Independence War and the taking of Rome. He became a deputy and then a senator in 1870. |
