| biography:
| Writer, born in Baden-Baden, SW Germany. In 1933 he fled with his family to The Netherlands to escape Nazi anti-Semitism. He was the only member of his family to survive the Auschwitz concentration camp, and in his work he tries to shake off his traumatic war experiences. His first work Strepen aan de hemel (1985, Stripes in the Sky) made a big impression. In addition to describing the ghastly concentration camp experience, he reminisces about his childhood in Germany and The Netherlands. Combined in his work are autobiographical elements and contemplative essays in a historical context. |
