| Prussian general, born in Schildau, NE Germany. In 1786 he joined the Prussian army, fought at Saalfeld and Jena (1806), helped to reorganize the army after its defeat by Napoleon (1807), and in the war of liberation gave distinguished service at Leipzig (1813). In the Waterloo campaign, as chief of Blücher's staff, he directed the strategy of the Prussian army. |
