| biography:
| Writer and academic, born in Oberriexingen-Württemberg, Germany. He studied theology and painting, made extensive travels in Europe, undertook wartime service, then followed an academic career. Employing an individualistic magical-realist approach, he confronted contemporary existential and social problems such as war crimes, the plight of those returning from the front, and the morality of the post-war ‘Wirtschaftswunder’ years, with a critical eye and from the standpoint of the ordinary man. His style was stark but graphic, later changing to a dream-like surrealism full of mysterious symbols. His works include Zwischenland (1949), Eine Stimme hebt an (1950), Die sterbende Jagd (1953), Das Schiff im Berg (1955), Einmal und oft (1956), Schlußball (1958), Gib acht in Domokosch (1959), Sizilianische Notizen (1959), and Am Paß Nascondo (1960). |
