| biography:
| Poet and playwright, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the son of a wealthy shoemaker. Originally trained as a painter, he became one of the most important writers of the Golden Age in The Netherlands. He was a member of the rederijkerskamer (chamber of rhetorics) d'Eglantier in Amsterdam, and knew and admired P C Hooft, who had also been a member. Although in some of his earlier lyrics the traditions of the rederijkers are still apparent, his work is clearly part of Renaissance literature. His lyrical poems are collected in Boertigh, Amoreus en Aendachtich Groot Lied-Boeck (trans Comical, Amorous and Religious Great Song Book), published after his death. As a playwright, his comedies include the short De klucht van de koe (1612, The Farce of the Cow) and the more elaborate Moorthe (1616, The Moorish Woman), an adaptation of Terentius' Eunuchus. His last work Spaanschen Brabander Ierolimo (1617) is considered his masterpiece, and was based on a Spanish romance Lazarillo de Tormes (1554). His untimely death at the age of 33 followed an illness incurred after falling through ice. |
