| Cartoonist and musician, born in Berlin, Germany, but raised in England. Educated at Highgate School of Arts, he taught art at Stamford School (1945) and Harrow (1948). His first cartoon was published in Lilliput magazine while he was still at school (1941). He was staff cartoonist on the London Evening News (1947) and after a brief time in New York (1950) returned in 1951 to freelance for Punch and others. His interest in music led to his creation of the Hoffnung Music Festivals at the Royal Festival Hall, in which his caricatures came to life and sound. They were also animated by Halas-Batchelor in the television series, Tales From Hoffnung (1965). |
