| Actor and director, born in Châteauroux, C France. An unruly child, he was encouraged to enter dramatics as a therapy and made his film debut in Le Beatnik et le minet (1965). He continued in occasional film roles while appearing on stage and television, including the series L'Inconnu (1974). His films include Le Dernier Métro (1980), Danton (1982), and Jean de Florette (1986). Among later films are Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), Green Card (1990), Germinal (1992), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), and Astérix and Obélix (1999). He also directed himself in Le Tartuffe (1984). He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1996. |
