| biography:
| US politician, born in Newburgh, New York, USA. She studied at Marymount College, Fordham University, and New York Law School, establishing a successful law practice (1961–74). She was assistant district attorney for the Queens district of New York (1974–8), then worked at the Supreme Court, heading a special bureau for victims of violent crime. She was elected as a Democrat to the US House of Representatives in 1981, where she gained a reputation as an effective, liberal-minded politician. She was selected in 1984 by Walter Mondale to be the first female vice-presidential candidate of a major party. In 1992 and 1998 she ran in the New York senatorial primary, but lost the nomination despite much popular support. In 1993 she was appointed US representative to the UN Human Rights Commission. |
