| Chemist, born in Paris, France. He became professor of inorganic chemistry at the Sorbonne in 1908. He discovered the rare earth lutecium (1907) and the law of optimum phosphorescence of binary systems, and showed that several elements which were hitherto considered pure were in fact mixtures. |
