| biography:
| Social philosopher, born in Cherbourg, NW France. He was trained as an engineer, and worked in the government department of bridges and roads (1870–92). He became interested in philosophy and social theory when he was 40, and left his job for study. His best-known work is Réflexions sur la violence (1908, Reflections on Violence), in which he argued that serious political opposition must also resort to violence, and that Socialism would only be achieved by confrontation and revolution. |
