| Political leader, born in La Hoguette, NW France. A former metal-worker, he joined the French Communist Party in 1947, becoming its general secretary in 1972. Under his leadership the Party joined the Socialist Party, but the union was severed in 1977. He unsuccessfully contested the 1981 presidential election. |
