| biography:
| Artist, born in Paris, France. He studied and set up a studio in Paris, where he became known for such works as ‘Une Baignade, Asnières’ (Bathers at Asnières, 1883–4, National Gallery, London), and ‘Un Dimanche d'été à la Grande-Jatte’ (Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte, 1884–6, Chicago), painted in a Divisionist style. His colour theories were influential, but his main achievement was the marrying of an Impressionist palette to Classical composition. |
