| French revolutionary, born in Orcet, C France. An advocate at the outbreak of the Revolution, he was sent by Puy de Dôme to the National Convention, and in 1793 became a member of the Committee of Public Safety. He crushed the insurrection in Lyon with merciless severity (1793), and helped to usher in the Terror. Robespierre's fall also brought down Couthon, and he was executed. |
