| biography:
| French statesman and prime minister (1946, 1949–50, 1958), born in Paris, France. He became a professor of history and edited the Catholic newspaper L'Aube. He was leader of the MRP (Movement Républicaine Populaire), and in addition to becoming prime minister, also served as deputy prime minister (1950, 1951) and foreign minister (1944, 1947, 1953–4). He opposed de Gaulle over the Algerian War, and was charged with plotting against the security of the state. He went into exile in 1962, returning in 1968. |
