| biography:
| Painter and sculptor, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He studied in Australia and Paris, and worked in London, where he was successful in portraiture. As official war artist for Australia (World War 1), he later visited Gallipoli to make sketches with C E W Bean, the war historian. He returned to Australia in 1921 and took up sculpture. |
