| Arctic explorer, born in New York City, USA. In 1879 he commanded the Jeanette in an attempt to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait. Having abandoned his ship in the pack ice in 1881, he travelled 300 mi by sledge and boat to the Siberian coast, but only two of his crew reached safety. |
