| biography:
| US politician, born in Avon, South Dakota, USA. During World War 2, he served with distinction in the Army Air Force. He studied at Northwestern University, and became professor of history and government at Dakota Wesleyan University. He was a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives (1956–61), and senator for South Dakota from 1963. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968, and opposed Nixon in the 1972 presidential election, but was defeated. He tried again for the presidential nomination in 1984, but withdrew. |
