| biography:
| Sculptor, born in New York City, USA. He studied at New York and Rutgers universities, began to work as a painter, then switched to sculpture. He was best known for his life-sized plaster figures, cast from life and usually unpainted, which exist as ghostly presences within the environments he created for them with real objects, such as ‘Girl in a Doorway’ (1969). In 1999 he was awarded the National Medal of the Arts. |
