| Painter, born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, NW England, UK. From 1757 he set up as a portrait painter, leaving his family and moving to London in 1762. Apart from two visits to France, and two years residence in Italy (1773–5), he stayed in Cavendish Square, where his reputation rivalled that of Reynolds. His many pictures of Lady Hamilton are particularly well known. |
