| biography:
| Geologist, born in Hodgdon, Maine, USA. He joined the US Geological Survey (1896) and became its director (1907), remaining in this post until 1930, except for his one year on the US Coal Commission (1922–3). In 1930–3 he was chairman of President Hoover's Federal Power Commission. An authority on the coal and oil industries, his advocacy of increased regulation of natural energy helped enact more restrictive legislation on Federal mining and land use. |
