| Naturalist and British soldier, born at Lackham House, Wiltshire, S England, UK. A failed career in the army and a disastrous marriage that led to the loss of his estates turned his attention to ornithology. He moved to Devon, where he produced his notable Ornithological Dictionary; or Alphabetical Synopsis of British Birds (2 vols, 1802). Montagu's harrier is named after him. |
